# How to Get an AI Assistant to Make a Phone Call for You

The steps below are taken from each vendor's help pages. We have not run them.

One way to have AI make a phone call for you is to text an assistant that has its own phone number and tell it who to call and what to ask. [OpenAssistant](https://openassistant.us/?utm_source=bestaipersonalassistants\&utm_medium=content\&utm_campaign=ai-make-phone-call-for-you) works that way. Google also has free, well-documented options in the US.

Some calls are only a phone call because the business has no website: the dry cleaner's prices, whether the hardware store has the part, a table for six on Friday. This guide covers:

- **OpenAssistant**: an assistant with its own phone number that you text, email or message in the dashboard. Its site says it phones people for you and reports back.
- **Google Gemini "Call for me"**: Gemini calls one business from your phone and reports back. Pixel 11 only.
- **Google Search**: AI Mode's **Check for me** and Search's **Have AI check pricing**, which call several local businesses and email you the results. Free in the US.

And a note on what **doesn't** do this, so you don't waste time looking.

## Before you start

- Know exactly what you want asked, and what the AI may and may not say on your behalf (your name, your phone number, a budget).
- Have a fallback: some businesses won't answer, and some calls fail.
- Check your location. Google's calling features are documented only for the US, and exclude five states (details below).

## Option 1: OpenAssistant (text it who to call)

OpenAssistant gives each assistant its own phone number. Its site says the assistant "phones people for you when a call is the right move, and reports back with what was said," and its homepage says it "can receive phone calls on your behalf like a receptionist." ([OpenAssistant](https://openassistant.us/ai-executive-assistant), [OpenAssistant](https://openassistant.us/)) Its changelog for says that even when a task is set to act on its own, the assistant asks you before placing a call in your voice, unless you chose otherwise. ([OpenAssistant changelog](https://openassistant.us/changelog))

### Steps

1. **Connect your own phone number** so you can text the assistant: in the dashboard, go to **Connections** in Settings, click **Phone Numbers** under **Identity & Defaults**, enter your number and the code it texts you. Not all countries are supported. System assistants show their number on the assistant's profile; for a custom assistant, you request a phone line from its profile. ([OpenAssistant](https://help.openassistant.us/en/articles/16276195-connecting-your-phone-number))
2. **Set how much it may do without asking.** Autonomy can be set globally or per kind of action. Set it to **Manual** globally if you want to approve everything first. ([OpenAssistant](https://help.openassistant.us/en/articles/15425929-supervision-autonomy-settings)) OpenAssistant's changelog says it regrouped these settings, into messages the assistant sends as itself and messages it sends as you, so the labels in the app may differ from the help center. ([OpenAssistant changelog](https://openassistant.us/changelog))
3. **Send the task.** Text it, email it or create a task in the dashboard. Name the business and number, say exactly what to ask, and say what it may share about you (your name, a budget). Requests from every channel show up in the dashboard, where you can answer questions and approve actions. ([OpenAssistant](https://help.openassistant.us/en/articles/16302208-waysto-work-with-openassistant))
4. **Read the report.** The assistant reports back with what was said.

**Where Google does better:** Google documents live transcripts, listening in and taking over a call; OpenAssistant's help center does not describe call controls yet. Check your plan on the [pricing page](https://openassistant.us/pricing?utm_source=bestaipersonalassistants\&utm_medium=content\&utm_campaign=ai-make-phone-call-for-you); the free Starter plan includes 1,000 credits at signup.

## Option 2: Gemini "Call for me" (one business, from your phone)

### What you need

You must be 18 or older and in the US, signed in to the Gemini app, with a **Pixel 11** on a US SIM, a Google AI subscription, the **Public Beta** version of the Phone by Google app, the latest Gemini app, and your phone set to English. It only calls US numbers for now, and there's a daily limit on calls. Google says it is rolling out gradually, so it may not be on your phone yet. ([Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/18336420?hl=en))

The call goes out from **your** phone number over your mobile network, so normal carrier rates apply. ([Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/18336420?hl=en))

### Steps

1. Open the Gemini app on your Pixel.
2. Ask Gemini to make the call. You can also put **@Call for me** in your request.
3. Be specific: dates, times, preferences, and acceptable alternatives. Google's own examples include booking a table for two at 7 PM and asking a dry cleaner what it costs to hem pants.
4. Read Gemini's summary of the task, including the number it will call and what it will share about you, such as your name and contact details.
5. If anything's wrong, ask Gemini to change it.
6. Tap **Call for me** to start.
7. When the call ends, you get a notification. Tap **View results** to read the summary in Gemini. The full transcript and recording are in your Phone app's call history.

([Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/18336420?hl=en))

### While it's calling

- Tap **Cancel** to stop before the call connects.
- Follow along with the live transcript in Gemini, or listen to live audio. Your microphone is muted by default. Tap **Audio** to turn the audio on or off.
- Tap **Take over** to jump in. This unmutes you, and Gemini tells the other person you're taking over before it leaves the call.

([Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/18336420?hl=en))

### What it will and won't do

It can ask about hours, stock and prices, book or confirm appointments and reservations, get through phone menus and wait on hold. It won't call emergency numbers, make payments or share card numbers, pass on sensitive personal information such as your Social Security number or health details, or make telemarketing calls. ([Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/18336420?hl=en))

Every call opens by saying it's an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf, and gives your name. ([Google](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/18336420?hl=en))

## Option 3: Google Search calls several businesses for you

These work on any phone or computer, in English, for signed-in users over 18.

### AI Mode: "Check for me"

1. Open the Google app and tap **AI Mode**, or go to google.com/ai on the web.
2. Type your request in the **Ask anything** bar. Google's examples include a deep cleaning appointment and a reservation for six with vegetarian options.
3. Select **Check for me**.
4. Answer any follow-up questions. A detailed first request means fewer of these.
5. Review the request details. Tick the box if you want an email summary (it's only sent if Google made calls).
6. Select **Looks good**.

([Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17104441?hl=en\&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid)) These steps are from Google's Android version of the page.

If the answer isn't online, Google calls businesses, sharing only the details you gave and confirmed. Web results come back in a few minutes, call results in up to 30 minutes. You get a notification, and the thread is marked in your AI Mode history. Select **Stop** to end it. If you don't want it to call anyone, type "don't call" in the prompt box. ([Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17104441?hl=en\&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid)) Google's May 2026 announcement says calling covers select categories such as home repair, beauty and pet care. ([Google blog](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/))

### Search: "Have AI check pricing"

1. In Google Search or the Google app, search for a local service, such as a hair salon, auto repair or pet groomer.
2. On the results page, tap **Have AI check pricing**.
3. Fill in the details of the service and timing.
4. Tap **Submit**.

Google calls several nearby providers, may share your name, and emails you the quotes, usually within about 30 minutes. It doesn't book anything; you contact the provider you pick. ([Google](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/16421135?hl=en))

For a product rather than a service, Google Shopping has a similar **Let Google call** option for checking stock and price at nearby stores. It can't hold items or ask custom questions. ([Google](https://support.google.com/googleshopping/answer/16742225?hl=en))

**Where these work:** Google's Business Profile help says automated calls for customers are available in the US except Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana and Nebraska, and are free for businesses and customers. Businesses can opt out. ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/16190256?hl=en))

## What doesn't make calls (yet)

- **ChatGPT:** OpenAI's help center has no article describing ChatGPT calling a business for you. The 1-800-CHATGPT line is for you to call ChatGPT, and OpenAI says its always-on "dots" can't initiate calls to you at launch. ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10193193-1-800-chatgpt-calling-and-messaging-chatgpt-with-your-phone), [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001530-getting-started-with-your-dot))
- **Poke:** its "Poke Human" service sends a real person, not an AI, to handle tasks such as phone calls. It's included with Poke Ultra at $199 a month. ([Poke FAQ](https://poke.com/faq))

For calls that are part of ongoing work with other people, start with OpenAssistant: you text it once, it has its own number, and it asks before calling in your voice. If you're in the US and just need quotes or hours, Google Search is free and works on any device. If you have a Pixel 11 and want one specific call handled while you listen in, use Gemini.

## Check it yourself

This is advice for you, not something we did. If you try these tools, give each the same three calls:

1. "Ask \[restaurant] if they have a table for four at 7:30 PM this Saturday." A good result is a clear yes or no with alternatives.
2. "Ask \[dry cleaner] the price to hem one pair of pants and how long it takes." A good result is a price and a turnaround time.
3. "Ask \[hardware store] if they have \[specific part] in stock." A good result is a yes or no.
